My daughter rang last night she as just moved house, had cable at the old
house but no cable in newer house build.
So she has got BT phone line and Sky TV with a "free" BB extra.
She is complaining of it being faulty by being slow and ages to download.
Now I guess being "free" it will be a minimum starter speed they giving her
and extra to pay for faster, am I correct?
Is Sky BB reliable and good, I think she might well be seeing difference
between the fibre optic cable and copper wire systems.

Well it may well be causing a problem, so they are not totally wrong,
but these questions are part of troubleshooting. If she were to go
onto the same 2mb package with virgin media she would get a worse
service than sky, because becuase they would reduce the speed after
she downloaded a certain amount and they do this on all their
packages.
On a technical level Virgin Media's service is more capable to achieve
high speeds upto 100mbps if they were selling, however for commercial
reasons, they limit usage because of the high loads it creates on
their network. The twist pair copper for ADSL is less capable and is
more prone to high loss of signals and noise which reduces the speed
you can get. And because these factors are effect by line length and
quality of copper and even age of the line there are more issues.
Report the speed test results, she may want to download a file from
Rapidshare on a level3 mirror, that will be a very good indication of
speed. The difference is this between cable and its and more due to
commercial and not technical reasons, she will download a 300MB file
possible quicker on a cable connection than ADSL but a 3GB file
possibly quicker on a ADSL connection because she will get a sustained
speed and the speed will not be reduced after a certain amount of MB.
Sky should provide you better service than say the like of Tiscali,
and even BT, when you connection is running its fine, in most cases
people see increases in speed, if they have moves on the same line
from another ISP. BUT if you have to call Customer service, the only
people that will ever help you are the UK call center's and that is
pot luck to see who you get.
In any case what does it matter, she can't get cable so she is stuck
with an ADSL connection, and for speed sky will give a decent speed of
what the line is capable of. There are some things that you can do
though to test the line, and eliminate the internal wiring. The
skyuser forum is great for all of the Sky BB related information. Here
is the link to the guide you need to do testing at the master socket,
http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/view-master.html . Its pretty simple
and it should give a good idea of the speed. By the way she should
check the speed by opening her browser and typing in 192.168.0.1 and
the default username and password is 'admin' , 'sky'. There should be
a 'DownStream Connection Speed' post that back and click on the 'show
statistics' button and post that back here and we should be able to
clear everything up. Do all of this at the test socket. |

It would help if you specified the router stats for the line. My Netgear
router (the "white" one) has on the 2Mb free BB:
down up
speed: 2048 416
attenuation: 63.5 31.5
noise margin: 13.1 13.0
and has been from the outset. Downloads are site dependent, but frequently
are reported in the range 180KB/s to 216KB/s (Firefox downloading) :-)
