I am on Virgin PAYG and today I noticed I pay 15p each time I ring
someone and they don't answer. It doesn't give me a chance to put the
phone down before I get a recorded message saying that person is
unavailable, it cuts in instantly. I have never left a message and don't
want to. Is there any way of stopping my call going to people's voicemail?
Do all providers charge like this? |

don't know if they still do?
What you need is a network that charges the least connection charge
and per second.
All the networks seem to be revising their connection charges upwards
to compensate for being forced to reduce roaming charges
No idea who now offers the best and for how much longer?

Virgin Mobile used to charge by the second and not have a min call charge,
was great as you could get away with 2 or 3 seconds and not get billed -
ideal for these situations with the horrid voicemail / 1571.
Virgin Mobile were the last to drop this, so now they all have a min call
charge. You will now get stung. 15p on PAYG and 10p if paying by DD /
contract.
Vodafone has recently increased their min charge as have others. It's a way
of making extra money, making back some of the money they 'lost' from
roaming - can't see that people will actually make more roaming calls as the
costs come down therefore bringing in more money.
I don't have voicemail / 1571 on my phones other than one number set aside
just for voicemail purposes, people can try calling me on my landline, my
VoIP account, my mobile and if they can't reach me but must leave a message
they can call my dedicated voicemail number which is a local area code
number and leave a message.
Once I find someone has voicemail / 1571 on their line / phone I just don't
call them and tell them why, now virtually all of them have seen the light
and removed voicemail / 1571. |

short contract look even more attractive.
For 15quid a month you get a Nokia 6120 (or a choice of lesser phones)
on M&M 300, with 300 extrax 3to3 mins, and free voicemail.
Cancle after 6 months total cost 90quid, which is what the phone is worth,
and a very useful load of mins and text.
Then either try 3 for a cheap upgrade on it, or stick in a 3PAYG sim,
or pay 3 for the unlock to use it on another network

If you do take this route, ensure you actually have a six month contract.
I got my new phone a few weeks ago. I ordered it online and opted for the
six month contract. After receiving the phone I asked customer services to
confirm the length of contract and was told it was18 months. Requests for
this to be changed came to naught as the customer services people were
either unable or unwilling to do so. I have now written to customer
services and am still awaiting a reply. |

The 3 shop printed out an additional sheet claiming the 18 month contract |
had been converted to 6 months.
So i have some hard copy if they claim otherwise.
I will end my Direct Debit at 6 months, whatever they claim

Hi
To the original question, Orange charge a connection charge even if you
do not get though especially abroad, as the networks abroad charge ALL
phone companies to try and connect though their service whether you
connect or not
If you are travelling abroad you can use a UK SIM card that has cheap
or no roaming charges and can be used worldwide have a look at
www.mobilephonesim.com its worth a look
